It’s looking more and more likely that Sam Mendes will direct not only the next Bond movie but the next two. Showbiz 411 say that he’s:
the definite director of Bond 24 and most likely Bond 25.
– and they have a pretty good track record when they’re prepared to stick their neck out like this.
So is the double duty because those oft-discussed plans to link the next two films are alive and well? That seems to make a certain amount of sense.
What seems more of a stretch, perhaps, is a new report at Yahoo Movies this afternoon. They seem to be jumping the gun on the next Bond picture’s casting, I’d say, as according to them, Penelope Cruz is already set to become:
the oldest ever Bond girl.
Because she’s 40 and will be 41 by the time production starts. Which isn’t very old, really, is it? But I guess that’s how these things work. If by “these things” you mean the sexist, ageist entertainment industries, which I did.
I don’t know why we can’t count Judi Dench, anyhow. What’s the difference between a Bond girl and a woman in a Bond film? And if there is a difference, why are some women in that Bond girl ghetto in the first place?
I think Cruz is great, and she’s certainly got the poster-ready, cover girl look that “these things” feed on, so it’s not that I think she’s an unbelievable choice, more that I’m sceptical about any choice actually having been made as yet.
Though… well, maybe they needed to get the casting locked down early for some reason. It’s interesting, because there are rumours going around about what the next film might entail and…
We’ll dig into them.
Bond 24 is likely to start shooting at some point next year, though nothing is official yet. Watch this space for more.
