| Friendship with Salma |  Penélope Cruz and Salma Hayek met when Penelope first went to the US to work on The Hi-Lo Country (1998). She was in a foreign culture, speaking a language that she hardly knew... Needless to say, she was scared and felt very lonely. But it was Salma who picked up Pe from the airport. Salma, a fellow Spanish speaker who had already lived in Los Angeles for a few years, was eager to show Pe places, talk her through the script and introduce her to people. She made Penélope feel welcome and loved.
Soon the two embarked on a close friendship together. The two free-spirited women would often spend holidays together, going to different places to see the culture and share the experience. They also wanted to work together and after years of looking, they finally found the right project - Bandidas (2006) - which they filmed in Salma's home country, Mexico. During the promotional tour of the movie, Pe and Salma appeared so close to each other that it led to gossip in the media about the two actually being lesbian lovers. The pair also posed together for one provocative shot showing Cruz grabbing Hayek's backside. "You know what they've been saying because of that picture? We are like sisters and we have some sense of humor... We did that in front of 100 photographers and the story now is that apparently we are lovers. I'm sorry to say, that is not the case," Penélope told David Letterman.
When Penélope was nominated for her first Oscar in 2007, it was indeed Salma who announced the nominees. She screamed "YES!" when hearing her best friend's name announced in the Best Actress category. The two celebrated Pe's Oscar nomination by hitting Hollywood night live.
"I love Salma Hayek", Penélope Cruz says. "We've been friends for a really long time. I admire how she has come such a long way and always remained grounded and who she is. She never compromises to follow her vision and she is loyal. Such qualities only mark the great stars." And great stars they both truly are! |
